Business strategy

In addition to the core enzymes business, Novozymes’ business strategy includes industrial microorganisms, biopolymers and pharmaceutical proteins.

Enzymes and microorganisms for industrial applications are Novozymes' core business. Hence, enzymes will continue to attract some 85% of our research resources, while 5% are used in microorganisms.

Based on our biotech competences and technologies, the business strategy also includes initiatives outside the core enzymes business. Novozymes will use in-house projects, strategic alliances and acquisitions to enter new business areas.

In short, the strategy consists of the following elements:

Enzymes and microorganisms for industrial use
Novozymes will expand the existing enzyme markets through more focused research & development efforts leading to new products and applications. Furthermore, we aim to target new geographical markets with our enzymatic solutions. Through a series of acquisitions, Novozymes has become a world leader in industrial microorganisms and will continue to expand in this field by introducing a series of new products and applications.
In 2005 Novozymes has launched strategic measures to support our growth potential within enzymes and microorganisms, focusing on new businesses in new industries as well as white biotech.

Biopolymers and pharmaceutical proteins
As much as 10% of the total research resources are deployed outside enzymes and microorganisms. Based on our existing competencies we are exploring new business opportunities based on our core technologies, fermentation and production of proteins.
