Microorganisms - what are they?

Microorganisms are found everywhere in nature. In the industry, they are used to clean surfaces and wastewater, improve the growth of plants and much more. Novozymes also uses microorganisms to produce enzymes.

Microorganisms are found everywhere in nature. They were the first living organisms on earth and are still the most abundant organisms today.

Microorganisms normally consist of only one or a few cells and are so small that they are not visible to the human eye. The most commonly known examples of microorganisms are bacteria and fungi.

Microorganisms have been living with, in and on human beings from the very beginning of mankind and interact with man in many different ways. Some microorganisms cause different diseases and health problems. Others maintain the right conditions in e.g. our stomachs.

Clean and green
Microorganisms are the major force in building up and breaking down different kinds of organic material in the environment. With our technologies, Novozymes can use these capabilities to e.g. clean surfaces and wastewater or to improve the growth of plants.

Microorganisms are also very efficient and safe producers of enzymes. Novozymes therefore uses selected bacteria and fungi to produce the large quantities of enzymes that we sell for industrial applications.
