The site comprises not only some of the first large production plants to have been built in Copenhagen, but also some of the last.
Today not many other large companies of this type remain so close to the centre of Copenhagen. This is a clear sign that Novozymes at Fuglebakken has done a lot to adapt to its surroundings.
For example, we have invested millions in a high-tech system for removing odours emitted by enzyme production. The fermentation process in particular can generate an odour that is very distinct. However, the odour is completely harmless because production is based exclusively on the use of completely natural ingredients such as potato starch, water and sugar.
So today there are, generally speaking, no odour emissions from Fuglebakken. Only in the event of occasional system failures are there the characteristic odours.
Part of the wastewater is discharged into Lynetten, the City of Copenhagen's wastewater treatment plant. Some ends up as fertiliser for Zealand after it has been treated at Novozymes' own wastewater treatment plant in Kalundborg (link to NovoGro®).
We wish to be a good neighbour that is considerate towards our surroundings. We are therefore happy to listen and explain what we are doing. For example, we held an open day laid on by a local environmental association, Agendaforening Nordvest, so that neighbours could visit us.
