Enzyme production leaves a type of broth of microorganisms, potato starch and sugar.
In the large recovery plant in Kalundborg, this biomass is heat-treated and has lime added to ensure that all the genetically modified microorganisms are dead.
This gives a nutrient-rich fertiliser ? NovoGro. And so enzyme production completes its natural cycle ? with thanks for the loan.
Every year fermentation produces 150,000 m3 of dry biomass ? so-called NovoGro 30. At the same time, 90,000 m3 of liquid biomass is produced ? NovoGro.
Following inactivation and sanitising, NovoGro is used by some 600 farmers in large areas of Sealand as fertiliser for their fields. This saves the farmers buying commercial fertiliser.
NovoGro contains the by-products nitrogen, phosphorus and lime.
