Gene technology in connection with food/feed production

Novozymes’ position on the use of gene technology in connection with food/feed production

Novozymes believes that industrial enzymes can contribute to a sustainable development of society.

Furthermore we find that the use of gene technology is a prerequisite for the future development of industrial enzymes to be used in the food/feed industry.

Therefore, we will continue to develop environmentally friendly enzyme products which will be produced by genetically modified safe and well known microbial production strains.

We consider the present level of safety requirements and other regulation for food/feed products containing substances derived from genetically modified organisms as adequate. We do, however, acknowledge the wish of the public to have ethical aspects involved in decision making processes for the use of gene technology in food, and we understand the need for further research and discussion.

We realise that in order to give the consumer a free choice of products some of our customers may wish to have products developed produced by alternative production processes, and we will constantly monitor developments within the market in order to have a timely evaluation of such wishes and to fulfil them if feasible.

We realise that the consumer must have a basic understanding of biotechnology and food production processes to make an informed choice. Therefore, we support long term education programmes to be set up in this field.

We will continue our dialogue with stakeholders all along the food supply chain from the raw material to the final product in order to follow and consider aspects of importance in connection with the use of gene technology in food production.
