A key objective of the new EU legislation REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals) is to promote sustainable industrial development. REACH will encourage substitution of chemicals and processes having negative impact on health and environment with enzymatic or biological alternatives.
This is certainly in line with Novozymes’ biotechnology base and business strategy. REACH will thus indirectly support Novozymes’ efforts to maintain and grow our existing business, and develop new enzymes and other bio-based products.
Cooperation with authorities, suppliers and customers
Novozymes supports a constructive cooperation among all stakeholders to implement REACH. To achieve this, Novozymes is working proactively as an individual company and collectively through trade associations, in cooperation with authorities, suppliers, customers and other enzyme manufacturers to implement the new legislation.
REACH project within Novozymes
A cross-organisational REACH project has been established within Novozymes. The project group continuously assesses and manages all relevant aspects of REACH, including the technical guidance documents associated with REACH, ensuring timely implementation and communication.
REACH and Enzymes
Enzymes used for technical applications (e.g. detergent, textile etc.) will require a pre-registration in 2008 and full registration starting in 2010 or later depending on the tonnage involved.
Such enzymes are currently marketed in compliance with the European Inventory of Existing Chemical Substances (EINECS). Guidance on substance identity and basis for tonnage determination for enzymes has been made.
Enzymes used in food and animal feed are exempted from REACH registration.
