Novozymes active in research education

Novozymes supports two new research academies to promote education of PhD-graduates and strengthen biotechnological research.
Danish biotech companies have achieved a leading position on the global market for biological products based on microorganisms. Novozymes is one of these companies. As the world leader in industrial enzymes and microorganisms, Novozymes will contribute to consolidate this position in coming years by intensifying research and supporting education of the next generation of scientists.

"This biotech area presents major scientific possibilities and challenges", states Anders Gram, Vice President at Novozymes. "The large number of biotech companies setting up right now in the Oresund region will strongly increase the requirement for qualified staff within the production of biologically based specialty chemicals, pharmaceutical products and veterinary products. This is our primary motive to actively support the education of new researchers, both financially and scientifically."

Two new research academies
During autumn 2002, Novozymes established the Novozymes Bioprocess Academy in collaboration with the Technical University of Denmark. In spring 2003, one more PhD-school has been established, the Danish Biotech Research Academy, in collaboration between six leading university groups and anchored at the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University of Denmark.

The collaboration on the two research academies represents advantages for all parties involved. Novozymes? financial contribution allows the universities to grant more PhD scholarships of high international standard to young talented scientists. Also, Novozymes brings the industrial perspective into the definition of the projects and contributes with highly qualified supervisors. In sharing know-how with the PhD students, the projects may be an important source of inspiration for both Novozymes and the universities.

"The objective of our engagement in this kind of collaboration is to strengthen the best research and PhD environments in Denmark directly related to Novozymes present and coming business foundation. This initiative will create a closer relationship between public research and education on one side and industrial front line research on the other side. The two new academies will intensify the exchange of knowledge between industry and universities by concentrating and targeting the effort", Anders Gram emphasizes.
