Press release:

Novozymes receives USD 2.2 million from the US Department of Energy

As part of a collaboration with High Plains Corporation, Novozymes NA, Inc. has been granted USD 2.2 million for the development of methods to convert biomass to ethanol

Within the project "Pre-Commercialization of a Biomass-derived Process Technology" Novozymes NA, Inc. has been awarded USD 2.2 million for enzyme development and applications research in converting biomass to ethanol. Novozymes NA, Inc. is a US-based subsidiary of Novozymes A/S. The project was launched by the High Plains Corporation and has been awarded USD 17.7 million in total by the US Department of Energy (DOE) towards the USD 35.4 million needed to achieve this first-of-its-kind biomass to ethanol pilot-plant demonstration. DOE has selected the project for its potential impact on the nation in energy savings, oil displacement benefits, economic improvements and environmental benefits over existing technologies.

The objective of this four-year DOE managed project is to utilize the entire corn plant - including the  distiller?s dry grain and corn stover - to achieve significantly higher ethanol yields while maintaining the protein feed value of the DDG. This technology will enable a more economical and sustainable ethanol industry, reduce the energy used per ethanol gallon produced, and increase the availability of ethanol. The project will integrate three areas of basic research into a process engineering design that has a target achieving a yield of 3.2 gallons of ethanol per bushel of corn. The plan is to accelerate the developments in pretreatments, enzyme catalysis and microbial biocatalytic research for biomass utilization. The research includes all necessary steps from bench-scale application testing to industrial proof of concept in a pilot -production facility at High Plains and thus emphasizes that optimization of the entire process from corn to ethanol is needed for making bio ethanol economically viable as a fuel source. Novozymes? main role in the project is to develop and test cost-effective enzymes that will contribute to achieving the target ethanol yields.

The DOE has sponsored additional projects in the field of bio-based products and technology totaling USD 94 million.

Since January 2001 Novozymes holds a three-year sub contract with the DOE for the development of enzymes for ethanol production in support of the Biomass Research and Development Act of 2000.
Novozymes will leverage the technology coming from this subcontract in developing cost-effective carbohydrases and explore the techno-economic feasibility of producing ethanol from biomass.
