Modified starches are used to prepare starch pastes for coating and surface-sizing paper. Surface sizing improves the printing surface of the paper and makes it more resistant to abrasion.
With amylases, the mill can modify starch in-house, which is economically attractive compared to buying modified starch from a third party.
Benefits for mills
Use a Novozymes amylase for modifying the starch for coating to achieve the following benefits:
- Significant cost reduction compared to using purchased modified starches
- A process obtaining good quality starch sizes
- A greater degree of control over paste viscosity
Replace aggressive oxidizing agents
Traditional methods of modifying starch use aggressive oxidizing agents. However, alpha-amylases such as Aquazym®, BAN® and Fungamyl® are used today as a better alternative for reducing starch viscosity.
Expertise at your fingertips
Many factors play a role in fiber modification: fiber origin, process equipment, and desired end-product properties. Novozymes can assess your current system and suggest appropriate enzyme solutions to meet your needs.
