Probably the best known of the antibiotics. It is a beta-lactam that was first isolated from the mould Penicillium notatum. The two most important penicillins are penicillin V and penicillin G, which are produced in Penicillium chrosogenum. It destroys bacterial cell walls by blocking the cross-linking reaction in peptidoglycan synthesis.
