Formulation is not only the way we phrase our words. At Novozymes we deliver enzymes in any form that the customer wants them. Developing new products that are stable and safe has always been a key focus area at Novozymes. This is the art of formulation.

Formulation of the enzymes is the third important process step after fermentation and recovery. Although much effort focuses on finding the right enzyme molecules for a given application, formulation plays a big role in the final use and success of the product. The nature of the enzyme protein is the starting point of all formulation work, and knowledge about parameters such as solubility and compatibility is indispensable. A new enzyme molecule with excellent performance can fail in the market if the enzyme is not stable during transportation and storage. The right formulation can remove these shortcomings, and the importance of having the right formulation should not therefore be underestimated.

Different customers have different needs, all of which Novozymes is able to meet when it comes to delivering enzymes exactly as required. Novozymes covers a wide range of enzyme formulations, ranging from liquid products and various forms of solid products to immobilized enzymes. We are able to tailor the formulation of our enzymes to the requirements of different industries and customers.  


Our main formulations are:


•T-granulates (T for tough) – dust-free handling

When Novozymes developed the T-granulate for the detergent industry some decades ago, new standards were introduced for a range of quality parameters such as physical strength and minimization of enzyme dust levels. T-granulates are still considered the industry standard for the detergent industry and the formulations against which all other producers measure themselves. All our enzymes for powder detergents are basically formulated as T-granulates. They are produced using a unique combination of high-shear granulation and various coating technologies.  

• BG/SG-granulates – small but safe

Novozymes’ many years of experience in the baking industry has resulted in another type of formulation, the BG-granulate, which allows us to deliver enzymes that have a much smaller particle size distribution than the products for the detergent industry but are still easy and safe to handle. The small particle size distribution allows the products to be mixed homogeneously into flour. Produced by spray-drying and fluid-bed agglomeration, the BG/SG-granulate is second to none in this industry sector.


• Microgranulates

Solid enzymes for industries other than the detergent industry were initially sold as spray-dried products. However, this type of product is very dusty, with a very broad particle size distribution. The concept of spraying and drying the enzyme on a core particle in a fluid bed was developed, leading to a product free of fine dusty particles and thus much safer for use in food industries. The fluid-bed process for making MG products is very flexible in handling different core materials for different industries, for example NaCl or maltodextrins, but good homogeneity of the MG product is dependent on a narrow particle size distribution of the core.

• CT-granulates – temperature-resistant solutions for the feed industry

Producing enzymes for the feed industry is a challenge because the enzymes must be able to withstand the rather high temperatures experienced when the enzyme/feed mixture is processed into feed pellets. To meet this requirement Novozymes has developed a formulation called the CT-granulate (C for coated and T for tough), which has a specially developed coating enabling even heat-sensitive enzymes to be used in this industry.

• Immobilized enzymes – can be used again and again

Novozymes delivers a number of immobilized enzyme products mainly to the starch and oils & fats industries, but also within biocatalysis. The enzyme is immobilized on a carrier or in a matrix, which increases the enzyme’s stability and prevents it from leaking into the substrate/product during application. The immobilized enzyme product is designed to perform the enzymatic modification over a long period of time (several months) in either batch or continuous operation. This ensures high productivity at low cost.

• Liquid formulations – convenient to handle on both small and large scale

Most enzymes are available in a liquid formulation. A liquid product is typically formulated and thus stabilized with polyols such as glycerol, sorbitol, or monopropylene glycol (MPG), sugars, and/or salts. The trick is to lower the water activity sufficiently to ensure that the solution is not only enzymatically but also microbially and physically stable.

New formulations are made in our formulation laboratories and pilot plant, which enables fast development and scale-up of almost any new formulation and process, ranging from samples weighing just a few grams to the 100-kg scale.

The key quality parameters for solid products are typically low dust, particle size, and stability of the granulate in the customer formulation, for example a detergent. For liquid products, the enzymatic, physical, and microbial stabilities are the three main focus points in the product development.

We have a wide array of analytical tools to guide us toward the right formulation of a new enzyme, but the learnings we have from the hundreds of products developed over the years play an invaluable role in the formulation development of a new product. So we have both the tools and the know-how to formulate enzymes to meet the needs of our customers.
