JumpStart® is the first commercially-available phosphate-solubilizing fungus in Australia. A phosphate inoculant, it works at root level to make more phosphate available immediately to the plant.


JumpStart® promotes more efficient use of phosphate, which results in quick emergence, early vigor, greater stress tolerance, and earlier, more even maturity. JumpStart® delivers a safe method of supplying phosphate to growing plants and reduces the need to seed-place high rates of phosphate fertilizer with sensitive seeds such as canola, pea, and lentil.

How it works

JumpStart® is a phosphate inoculant containing the naturally occurring soil fungus Penicillium bilaii (P.bilaii), discovered by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. It 'colonizes', or grows along, plant roots, releasing organic compounds that release the "bound" mineral forms of less available soil and fertilizer phosphate, making it immediately available for the crop to use.

JumpStart improves the efficiency of phosphate, which can reduce the amount of fertilizer required, depending on levels of available phosphate within the soil. It does not replace the need for P fertilizer.

Balanced nutrition

Balanced nutrition of phosphate and nitrogen is necessary to maximize pulse crop yields. TagTeam® provides this balanced nutrition by combining the best in rhizobia strains with the active ingredient from JumpStart®to produce a MultiAction® inoculant.


The active ingredient in JumpStart® is the soil fungus Penicillium bilaii (P. bilaii). This fungus and the rhizobia in TagTeam® inoculants work together to create unique value for the plant . The soil fungus is key, as it grows on the plant roots and makes less available forms of soil phosphate immediately available to the plant. Phosphate helps create and move much needed energy for the nitrogen fixation process. Fixed nitrogen is the easiest form of nitrogen for a plant to use.

The other benefit of the soil fungus' action is that it leads to development of more root hair. Each root hair is a potential infection point for the rhizobia bacteria. More infection points mean more nodules and more nodules mean more nitrogen is fixed. More fixed nitrogen equals more yields. TagTeam® maximizes pulse crop yields.

Nitrogen inoculants - a miracle of nature

Nitrogen inoculants are a highly effective method of supplying nitrogen to legume crops. They contain species and strains of rhizobia bacteria that form symbiotic associations with legume plants and fix nitrogen from the air into a form the legume plants can use. Fixed nitrogen is the easiest form of nitrogen for a plant to use and nitrogen fixation is matched to plant growth and the plant's need for nitrogen.


Legumes can fix up to 80% of their total nitrogen requirement. For example, a three-ton-per-hectare pea crop needs about 150 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare. A nitrogen inoculant can supply 80% of this need, equivalent to 120 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare. However, all legume crops need a high-quality nitrogen inoculant to take full advantage of their nitrogen fixation capabilities.

The rhizobia bacteria that form nodules and fix nitrogen for legume crops are living organisms. Over time, rhizobia bacteria die-off in soil and become less effective, especially in saline or hot and dry conditions, or in soils with very high or low pH levels.

Paddock-proven nitrogen inoculants for maximum nitrogen supply and yield

Cell-Tech® inoculants are easy to use, high-quality nitrogen-fixing inoculants that increase the supply of nitrogen to pulse crops. By inoculating with Cell-Tech® every time they sow a pulse crop, growers can supply high numbers of effective nitrogen-fixing rhizobia and ensure optimum nitrogen fixation and crop yields.

Cell-Tech® makes legume crop fertility plans more efficient, boosts yields and delivers a great return on investment. The Australian Legume Inoculants Research Unit tests and approves Cell-Tech® inoculants, which contain effective rhizobia strains in high-quality formulations to ensure peak performance in the field.

Cell-Tech® is available in two formulations for simple, convenient inoculation:

  • Peat formulation – a self-sticking formulation for application on-seed.
  • Granular formulation – a high-titre peat-based granular formulation for application in-furrow.

Where to use

Growing a pulse crop: All pea, lentil, fava bean and chickpea crops need a high-quality nitrogen inoculant to effectively take advantage of their nitrogen fixation capabilities. Over time, rhizobia bacteria die-off in soil and become less effective. By inoculating with Cell-Tech® every time they sow a pulse crop, growers can supply high numbers of effective nitrogen-fixing rhizobia and ensure optimum nitrogen fixation and crop yields.

Low to medium levels of soil nitrogen: Cell-Tech® should be used where the availability of nitrogen limits pulse crop productivity. Best results to the use of Cell-Tech® occur on soils that have low-to-medium levels of availabe nitrogen.
