Cellulosic ethanol

Novozymes develops technologies that enable more types of biomass to be turned into commercially viable biofuel. We provide the industry’s best enzyme solutions and process optimizations to enable commercialization of cellulosic ethanol.

Cellulosic ethanol can be a major source of sustainable energy. Feedstocks including corn cobs, wheat straw, woody biomass, and municipal waste are readily available, and it is estimated that cellulosic ethanol from energy crops and agricultural residues can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80-130%, as compared with gasoline.

Enzymes are vital in converting the complex structure of biomass to ethanol, and Novozymes has more than a decade of experience in perfecting the biomass conversion process. Today, our state-of-the-art Cellic® solutions make the technology available at a commercially viable cost. We also work closely with our partners to fully understand the critical relationship between process mechanics and enzymes.

Novozymes is committed to developing sustainable solutions that continuously enhance your business in cellulosic ethanol, and have a beneficial impact on the environment.

Novozymes-Beta Renewables partnership to support your cellulosic ethanol projects

In Nov. 2012, Novozymes and Italy’s Beta Renewables entered into a strategic partnership to jointly market Novozymes’ cellulosic biofuel solutions.  The partnership aims to de-risk the technology and operations of the cellulosic ethanol business, and prove that cellulosic ethanol plants can be run at commercial scale.

The partnership offers a technology package including Novozymes’ enzymes, Beta Renewable’s license to the Proesa™ process technology for conversion of biomass to sugar, and Chemtex’s supply basic engineering and key equipment. Novozymes and Beta Renewables address all critical elements of your cellulosic ethanol project.
