Oils & Fats

Novozymes solutions for oils and fats effectively improve oil processing.

Enzymatic degumming is a well-established industrial process for the physical refining of vegetable oils. With enzymes gums are effectively removed in a sustainable process where you reduce the use of chemicals and get a more profitable process.

Enzymatic interesterification produces hard stocks for margarine and shortening fats without creating unhealthy trans-fatty acids. Enzymatic interesterification is a more cost-efficient process than chemical interesterification.

Enzymes also allow the production of fish oils and other specialty oils such as oleochemicals from specialty esters and amides for the cosmetics industry.

Enzymatic degumming

Effective gum removal and higher oil yield.

Enzymatic degumming of vegetable oils is a more profitable alternative to conventional degumming. Enzymes effectively hydrolyze gums to minimize phosphorous levels and achieve higher oil yield. You also save chemicals and get a more environmentally-friendly process.

Key benefits

  • Higher oil yield
  • Fewer chemicals
  • Easier process

Quara® LowP

Abolishing transfatty acids

The most common processes for obtaining the right consistency and melting points of margarine and baking fats are chemical interesterification and hydrogenation. Both processes require harsh processing, often resulting in high levels of waste products and generation of  trans-fatty acids. Enzymatic interesterification is a more cost-efficient and sustainable process,  and it produces no trans fatty acids.

Key benefits

  • Produces higher-quality fats
  • Enables natural processing without the use of chemicals

Fish oil production

Synthesizing oils for healthy nutrition with Lipozyme® 435

Enzyme-catalyzed esterification results in products of higher purity and creates less by-products than fish oils processed using chemicals. Enzymes can create new products with differing EPA & DHA ratios.

Key benefits

  • Accepts a wide range of alcohols and fatty acids as substrates for modification
  • Carries out reactions at mild temperatures, limiting the destruction of heat-labile components
  • Produces purer products
  • Preserves natural color

Lipozyme® 435

Lipozyme 435 is a nonspecific lipase with activity against a broad range of fatty acids. It is useful for ester production, acidolysis and the generation of Omega-3-boosted lipid products.

Specialty oil production

Purer processing with enzymes.

A range of specialty oils and oleochemical products can be produced using lipases, resulting in cost efficiency, purer products and reduced environmental impact. Energy consumption is lowered and no potentially toxic chemicals are released into the environment.

Key benefits

  • Produces purer products
  • Increases yield
