Bioaugmentation has long been used in the pulp and paper wastewater treatment industry for all types of mills using either aeration stabilization basins or activated sludge treatment systems. Aeration stabilization basins are a natural fit for bioaugmentation because they have little operational control. In aeration stabilization basins, bioaugmentation is the best way to respond to increased loading, or to resume operation after a toxic event. Bioaugmentation can also be used in activated sludge plants to respond to increased loadings, or to stabilize treatment and improve shock-load resistance.
