Biopolishing for new fabrics

Novozymes is working to develop a new way to do biopolishing for the first time with additional popular fabrics beyond cotton.  It’s our latest innovation. Look for more details at ITMA 2019.

What is biopolishing?

Biopolishing is an environmentally-friendly process that uses enzymes to extend the lifetime of cotton knits and soon, additional fabrics. By using the biopolishing process, mills and laundries can produce fabrics that last at least 20% longer.

In biopolishing, the enzymes remove protruding fibers from the surface of the fabric, leaving a clean surface. This improves dyeability, and it creates better-quality, longer lasting, more sustainable textiles. 

The biopolish effect is permanent - even after 30 washes. 

Surveys show that consumers want clothes that last longer. This presents an opportunity for brands to differentiate their products toward consumers. It gives mills and laundries the chance to differentiate their products towards brands.

How is it done?

Biopolishing beyond cotton is being developed as a separate step during processing - either in knitting mills or laundries.
