How does biogas production work?

Biogas production is a 4-step biological process.

  • • Hydrolysis, which results in the conversion of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins to sugars, fatty acids, and amino acids.
  • • Acidogenesis, which leads to the production of carbon acids.
  • • Acetogenesis, which results in acetic acid, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen.
  • • Methanogenesis, where methane is formed by specific microorganisms called methanogens.

Enzymes, like Novozymes BG Max, are most active in the hydrolysis and acidogenesis steps of the biogas production process. The microorganisms and enzymes in BG Max degrade a wide range of organic compounds, including proteins, fats, sugars, and starches. The results? More biogas generated, and less Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD).

Novozymes BG Max® 3000 saved one pork processing facility $170,000 per year through increased biogas generation, which reduced the need to buy natural gas.

The facility, which has between 15,000 and 17,000 pigs on any given day, generates approximately 8,700 m3/day of organic-rich wastewater, which is treated at an on-site wastewater treatment plant. The plant already generated biogas at the plant, but they were looking for a cost-effective solution that could increase biogas production and improve their anaerobic system performance.

The customer chose BG Max because of the potential return on investment from improved biogas production. In October, the customer began adding BG Max to the influent of the anaerobic basins following a prescribed dosing protocol.

BG Max delivered a significant return on investment for the plant, based on the offset of natural gas purchases due to the generation of additional biogas. As the cost of natural gas begins to rise, the benefits of improved anaerobic treatment will increase even more.
