The structure and composition of the biomass are very sensitive to sudden changes in environmental factors—for example, pH and temperature. Furthermore, there are a number of toxic or inhibitory compounds that hinder the effectiveness of these microbes at performing essential tasks, like biodegradation.
To ensure that the existing microbial community is performing as expected, it is important to understand which compounds, and at which concentrations, are going to have a negative impact on your plant’s biological treatment system.
Download Novozymes’ Guide to Inhibitory Chemicals, which includes:
- A list of inorganic and organic pollutants and the reported thresholds to which activated sludge can perform properly;
- A list of compounds known to have negative effects on specific processes, such as trickling filters and anaerobic digestion;
- A list of compounds to monitor to avoid loss of nitrification.
This guide can serve as both informational and as a reference for future use.
