Give your brand a natural advantage

Sustainability is no longer only for niche brands. Consumers are increasingly aware of their footprint and are asking brands to help them be more environmentally friendly. Soapers across the globe are responding with ambitious, transparent and measurable sustainability goals.

Enabling more biological detergents

Hygiene and cleanliness are basic human needs – and by extension, so are detergents. They help us care for the clothes and linens we live and sleep in and avoid build-up of dirt, fungi and bacteria.

But as we’ve all come to recognize on our journey towards a more climate-friendly future, ‘clean’ can come at a cost. The balance of our ecosystems is being dramatically disrupted. And while we may not expect our favourite detergent brand to be 100 % biological today, we do expect it to take steps towards a more sustainable tomorrow.

We believe that nature gives what nature wants

Since 1963, we’ve been exploring biological alternatives to chemical-based cleaning and innovating detergent solutions that use nature’s own little problem solvers: Enzymes. Through countless studies, we’ve been researching the properties of these tiny, powerful proteins, examining how they can help us save water, time, energy and raw materials, all while being gentle on the hand and ensuring superior performance again and again, even at low wash temperatures.

A clean balance -
More sustainable than fossil-based alternatives

While reformulation can seem risky for a brand, we’d argue it’s just the opposite. The move towards biobased solutions implies a more resilient supply chain, but also a more resilient and future-proof product. One that breaks down stains, without breaking the environment, your consumer’s conscience or their bank.

Through this perfect synthesis between price, performance and sustainability, we can all help restore the delicate balance between humans and nature.

Help consumers reduce CO₂ emissions

Lower wash temperatures give consumers a smaller environmental footprint, as the washing machines consume less energy to heat the water. For one household, this may not be a lot. But if all European consumers washed at 30°C rather than 40°C, they could reduce annual CO2 emissions by more than 3.5 million metric tons. But lower temperatures impact detergents’ cleaning power negatively. You can close this performance gap by reformulating with enzymes. Or you can rebalance your ingredient mix to increase the share of enzymes. With this approach, your enzyme-rich detergents will clean as well at 30°C as non-enzymatic detergents do at 40°C.

Make clothes look new and last longer

Consumers experience the most significant loss of garment “newness” after the first wash. And repeated washings often lead to a buildup of fuzz and pills. So, it’s unsurprising that 54% of consumers polled in the same study said they consider clothes “worn out” after just 20 washes.

Shrink your laundry brand’s overall footprint

Every year, large amounts of CO2 are emitted and chemicals from detergents enter our water systems from doing laundry in households.

We have assessed the sustainability benefits of enzymes in detergents across their life cycle. The resulting Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) showed that replacing 30% of a detergent’s fossil-based surfactants (LAS) with a blend of enzymes could save around 9 grams of CO2 in every wash.

This doesn’t sound like much, but if half of all Latin American laundry loads were washed with these enzyme-rich detergents, the estimated CO2 savings would be equivalent to taking 45,000 cars off the road for a year. This example shows how enzyme-rich detergents contribute to a lower carbon footprint.  By replacing chemicals with more environmental-friendly enzymes, we also reduce the pressure on living organisms in rivers and lakes.
