Guar and locust bean gums - common additives

From mayonnaise to cosmetics, most products that need thickening and stabilizing  contain guar or locust bean gum. These common additives, also known as E410 and E412, are used as a gelling agent in processed and convenience foods as well as personal care products. They give your ice-cream and body lotion a smooth texture, and keep your ketchup and salad dressing free of lumps.

Gums - a growing challenge for detergents

684 new diet foods with guar and locust bean gum launched in Europe in 2017.

Guar and locust bean gums may solve a challenge for the personal care and food sectors, but the mannan-based stains they leave behind create a challenge for laundry detergents. They’re difficult to remove, and because the gums are added to such a wide variety of products, they’re hard to avoid. And with the trend towards healthier eating, they’re becoming more and more common. Guar and locust bean gums are a key component of many diet foods. In 2017 alone, 684 new low-fat/low-sugar food products with guar and locust bean gum launched in Europe (Mintel Global New Products Database).

Mannanases at work – see a mannan stain disappear

Because mannan molecules are formed of long chains of sugars, their stains are difficult for detergents to remove.

Mannanase enzymes attack mannan stains by cutting mannan molecules into tiny sugars that dissolve in the wash water. Detergent can now lift the mannan stains away from the fabric.
